Etude des agents pathogènes et épidémiologie ArchiMer

Le programme 4 portant sur la pathologie des coquillages dans le cadre d'une gestion durable des productions ostréicoles, comporte 2 actions principales réparties en une étude d'épidémiologie analytique et descriptive des agents pathogènes (Action 1), et l'étude des relations hôtes/agents pathogènes (Action 2). Les résultats 2001 présentés ici sont relatifs à ces 2 actions, avec notamment des informations sur les infections à virus de type herpès, et de recherche de bactéries pathogènes chez Crassostrea gigas lors des épisodes de mortalités estivales. Par ailleurs, l'émergence d'un programme national, intitulé MOREST (pour Mortalités Estivales) sur l' huître creuse C. gigas va permettre de rappeler le contexte scientifique des relations hôtes/pathogènes.

Les maladies des mollusques : étiologie et progrès récents des recherches ArchiMer

Recent research in mollusc pathology has enabled different pathogens of the large systematlc groups to be described. The main microorganisms and Protozoans are enumerated showing the economic incidence of the deseases on mollusc production. We also mention recent results obtained in the laborarory for dlfferent purified organisms. Finally, we review advances in cell culture giving an example of the application of these techniques experimental pathogenesis.

Controlling health of livestock has become of considerable importance to the aquaculture industry. Selective breeding of animals with increased resistance to pathogens is likely to complete efficiently the use of drugs, vaccines or prophylactic approaches that may be difficult to implement. A review of the scientific literature shows that the prospect of selecting for increased resistance is quite hopeful in both molluscs and fish. Yet, selecting for disease resistance is hampered by the difficulty to measure the resistance of individuals. Prospects for the development of «markers» that would predict the genetic merit of individuals without pathogen challenge are presented.
